Ich finde es nicht mal den rundum besten Muppet-Clip, aber er ist einfallsreich, hochwertig produziert und einfach unglaublich liebevoll umgesetzt. So könnte es auch im Jahr 2009 doch noch mal was mit einer Neu-Belebung der Muppets werden...

The story of Saddam - The little dictator
So now here´s in english how it all began... and didn´t happen in the end.
At the end of 2006 Saddam was history and Comedy Central Germany was looking for new, crazy comedy-show concepts. At least - that´s what they told german comedy writers.
Suddenly I had this idea: What if Saddam reincarnates? As a childrens´ toy?
Something like "Toy Story" meets "South Park".
I startet gathering ideas and wrote the concept "Saddam - The little dictator" as a sitcom with moving-mouth puppets.
Sure as hell Comedy Central Germany had to go nuts about this funny, crazy idea.
Unfortunately - they didn´t. Comedy Central Germany started with `Funniest Homevideo´-shows and some otherwise rejected german comedians.
But I didn´t want to give up so early (and I knew that one year later the Saddam-reincarnation-twist wouldn´t be very convincing anymore).
So I sent the concept to Brainpool (one of the largest german production companys mainly involved in comedy). They really liked it and I met with some important people.
Everybody knew that this kind of bold comedy wouldn´t get made at the mainstream TV stations, but Brainpool was just about to start its own website "MySpass.de" (it´s a german pun: `Spass´= `Fun´) and they wanted to produce Saddam exclusively for this website.
Some more meetings followed. I had to battle hard for my visions: Sometimes they wanted a dictator still alive as the main character, sometimes they wanted to dress up `punch&judy´ puppets as Saddam and the other characters to save money. But in the end they agreed that it had to look good and at least a little convincing.
Then they asked me to write a 10-minute-pilot. I locked myself in my room and after some days it was done. I proudly presented my pilot to the folks at MySpass and they loved it.
End of story. Already.
That´s how television works... even if it´s just online TV: The most ambitious project "MySpass.de" was scaled down financially a lot before it even started and only some very little productions were launched. Today, "MySpass" mainly is a platform with recycled television content from the Brainpool archives.

P.S.: Comedy Central Germany is no longer a TV channel on its own. They share their frequenzy with NICK. Which once again shows to the world: Germans got no humor and german comedy writers´ got no new ideas - so they don´t need their own Comedy Central. Depressing!

Die Geschichte von Saddam, dem kleinen Diktator
Hier gibt´s die Geschichte des Konzeptes "Saddam - Der kleine Diktator"... und wie am Ende nix daraus wurde.
Ende 2006 war Saddam Geschichte und `Comedy Central Deutschland´ suchte für seinen Programmstart neue, abgefahrene Comedy-Konzepte. Zumindest wurde das von den Verantwortlichen damals gebetsmühlenartig wiederholt!
Und plötzlich dachte ich so bei mir: Was, wenn Saddam wiedergeboren wird. Und zwar als Kinderspielzeug. Also eine Mischung aus "Toy Story" und "South Park".
Ich hab angefangen, Ideen zu sammeln und kurze Zeit später war das Konzept zu "Saddam - Der kleine Diktator" fertig. Ich war überzeugt, dass schon die wilde Grundidee, gepaart mit Handpuppen-Comedy für Erwachsene, Comedy Central sofort kicken müsste.
Der Kick blieb leider aus, denn bei Comedy Central entschied man sich kurz nach dem Start, doch lieber auf Clipshows und bekannte Comedians vergangener Tage zu setzen.
Außerdem, so die Begründung, "sei Saddam ja tot und nicht mehr von Interesse". Meiner Meinung nach war das damals totaler Quatsch, denn es ging ja eben um Saddams Wiederauferstehung... und Bush vs. Irak war auch 2007 noch ein ergiebiges Thema, vom medial hochgepushten `Kampf der Religionen´ mal ganz abgesehen.
Mir war allerdings klar: Das Konzept hatte natürlich nur eine begrenzte Halbwertzeit, denn allmählich würde Saddam wirklich zu sehr an Bedeutung verlieren, um eine neue Show mit ihm zu starten.
Also schickte ich das Konzept an die Produktionsfirma Brainpool ("TV Total", "Stromberg" u.v.m.). Dort fand man sofort großen Gefallen an meiner Idee und so kam ich zu einem Gespräch mit Ralf Günther.
Ihm war natürlich klar, dass man eine derart dreiste Idee nicht im deutschen Mainstream-Fernsehen unterbringen kann. Allerdings stand der Start der Brainpool-Website "MySpass.de" kurz bevor - und da konnte Ralf Günther sich Saddams Abenteuer bestens vorstellen.
Es folgte ein weiteres Gespräch mit den MySpass-Verantwortlichen, in dessen Verlauf ich u.a. wieder harte Überzeugungsarbeit leistete, dass die Hauptfigur Saddam Hussein sein müsse und eben kein noch lebender Diktator (mit viel weniger medialer Präsenz und weniger bekannten Macken als Saddam). Außerdem musste ich den MySpass-Verantwortlichen auch solche Ideen ausreden wie "man kann statt Klappmaul-Handpuppen, die wie Spielzeuge aussehen, doch sicher auch einfach Spielzeug-Puppen aufschneiden".
Klar, aus einem Plüsch-Teddy lässt sich eine Klappmaulfigur machen. Bei einer He-Man-Figur wird das wohl schon schwieriger.
Ich wurde gebeten, einen circa 15-seitigen Piloten zu schreiben. Da hab ich mich ein paar Tage hintergeklemmt und das Endergebnis hat die MySpass-Verantwortlichen rundum zufrieden gemacht.
Hier endet die Geschichte. Schon.
Tja, so ist das Fernsehgeschäft... sogar im Internet: Das ambitionierte Vorhaben MySpass.de wurde dann doch (finanziell) weit kleiner als angepeilt und es wurden kaum Eigenproduktionen gestartet. Heute ist MySpass eher eine Verwertungsplattform für Brainpool-Fernsehinhalte geblieben. (Abgesehen von genau einer ausdauernden Eigenproduktion, nämlich dem recht erfolgreichen "Ulmen.tv")
Update:
Momentan schwirrt der ein oder andere Puppen-Pilot bei den deutschen Sendern rum, aber meistens kommen sie über das Stadium des Piloten nicht hinaus.
Es wird also wohl noch ein langer Weg bis Deutschland witzige Puppencomedy im TV zu sehen bekommt...

News - in Kürze
Ist das wirklich schon ein Jahr her, dass ich hier zuletzt gebloggt habe. Schande über mich. Ist ja nicht so, als hätte ich nichts zu erzählen. Gerade aktuell liegen zwei Puppen-Comedy-Konzepte bei einem großen deutschen Sender... man darf gespannt sein.
Aber es ist ja nicht das erste Mal, dass ich es mit einem Puppen-Comedy-Konzept versuche. In Kürze werde ich hier mal mein Konzept "Saddam - Der kleine Diktator" online stellen und seine bitter-komische Geschichte erzählen.
Und ich verspreche: Es wird kein Jahr dauern!
